PENTECOST Bible Lesson Overview
Theme: The Holy Spirit's Power & Presence
Big Truth: The Holy Spirit gives us power to be brave, bold witnesses for Jesus - and He lives inside us!
Key Scripture: Acts 2:1-21
Memory Verse: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." — Acts 1:8 (NIV)
Pillar Focus: POWER — Jesus promised His Spirit so we could do what He did and live as He lived.
Age Range: Preschool • Elementary • Preteen
Duration: 60–90 minutes
1) INTRODUCTION
Imagine you're afraid. You're hiding with your friends. You feel small, weak, scared. Then suddenly — WHOOOOSH! — something powerful enters the room. Everything changes. You feel brave. You feel bold. You feel ALIVE.
That's what happened at Pentecost. A group of scared disciples got filled with God's Holy Spirit — and they became some of the bravest people who ever lived. Today, we're discovering what happened when God's power showed up in a room full of frightened people. And here's the crazy part: that same Holy Spirit wants to fill YOU.
2) GAME: "WINDSTORM CHALLENGE!"
Introduction: The day of Pentecost started with a SOUND — like a mighty rushing wind! You couldn't see it, but you could FEEL it move everything around. Today, we're going to experience what that rush of wind might have felt like, and we're going to move like the Holy Spirit is moving us!
Materials: Lightweight items: balloons, streamers, paper cups, scarves, tissue paper, Open space (gym or large room), Optional: fans (battery-operated).
Instructions:
1.Spread lightweight items across the floor — scatter them everywhere.
2.Divide kids into teams of 3-4.
3.Explain: "The Holy Spirit came like a rushing mighty wind. YOUR JOB: use ONLY the wind from your breath (or run with streamers) to move the items across the room to the 'fire zone' (mark a spot with tape)”
4.Kids blow, run with scarves, create "windstorms" with their bodies to move the items.
5.As items reach the fire zone, kids shout: "HOLY SPIRIT POWER!"
6.First team to move all their items gets to ring a bell or make noise as the "official announcers of Pentecost.
Connection Moment: "You just created a windstorm with your breath and movement. But on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit's power was SO REAL, SO STRONG, that it shook the whole house! And it didn't just move things — it CHANGED PEOPLE. Let's see what happened next.”
Preschool Tip: Give little ones scarves and let them dance and wave them as if the wind is moving them. Celebrate their "wind dancing" and say,
"The Holy Spirit makes us move and dance and come alive!"
3) PRAISE & WORSHIP
Introduction: The disciples didn't just TALK about joy — they SANG, they DANCED, they CELEBRATED! When the Holy Spirit fills your heart, worship isn't boring — it's EXPLOSIVE! Let's worship like people who just got filled with the power of God!
Song List:
"Spirit of the Living God" - Hillsong Kids
"Holy Forever" - Jesus Culture Kids version
"Fire, Fall Down" - Kids Worship Edition
"Same Power" - Jeremy Camp (Kids version)
"Come Holy Spirit" - Prayer & Hymn version for kids
How to Make Worship Fun:
During "Spirit of the Living God" - Have kids stretch their arms toward the sky like flames reaching up. Sway side to side as if moved by wind. During "Holy Forever" Have kids place hands on their hearts and feel the presence of God. Whisper the chorus together, then BUILD to shouting it.
During "Fire, Fall Down" - This is the BIG ENERGY moment. Kids jump, spin, dance, move with total freedom. No sitting still! The Holy Spirit is ALIVE in us!
Presence Moment (Mid-Worship Pause):
Have everyone stand in a circle. Place hands out toward the center.
Say softly: "Right now, the Holy Spirit is here. He's not just in the Bible story - He's RIGHT HERE WITH US. Can you feel it?”
Pause for 10-15 seconds of silence.
"Say with me: 'Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me with your power. Fill me with your courage. Fill me with your love.”’
Let kids repeat after you, line by line. Then play the most powerful song — let them MOVE, CELEBRATE, and ENCOUNTER God's presence.
4) BIBLE STORY SERMON: PENTECOST - WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT ARRIVED
Teaching Styles Used: Character Immersion + Interactive Storytelling + Call & Response + Object Lesson.
PART 1: The Wait (Setting the Scene)
Leader/Narrator (speaking with urgency):
"Picture this: Jerusalem. The disciples are in a locked room. They're scared. 120 of them — waiting. Jesus told them: 'Wait for the gift my Father promised. You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you. ' But here's the thing — they didn't know WHEN. They didn't know HOW. They just knew to wait. "
Quick Interactive Moment:
"Can you imagine sitting in a locked room with your friends, not knowing what's coming? Raise your hand if that would make you nervous!"
Visual Moment (15 seconds):
Hold up a wrapped box.
"Jesus basically said: 'You're getting a GIFT that will change EVERYTHING. But you have to wait.'
The disciples had NO IDEA what they were about to experience."
PART 2: The Moment (The Holy Spirit Arrives — With MOVEMENT)
Leader (with building excitement):
"Then — on the day of Pentecost — something INCREDIBLE happened.
EVERYONE STAND UP RIGHT NOW!"
(Kids stand)
Leader continues: "Listen to what happened: Suddenly, a sound like a RUSHING MIGHTY WIND came from heaven and filled the whole house!"
PHYSICAL MOMENT #1 — WIND: "FEEL that wind! Everyone sway like the wind is pushing you!" (Kids sway, move, feel the motion for 5-10 seconds)
"Now the Bible says they SAW something AMAZING — tongues of FIRE appeared above each person's head! But it didn't BURN them!"
PHYSICAL MOMENT #2 — FIRE: "Reach your arms UP toward the sky — like FIRE is above your head! Can you feel it?"
(Hold for 3-5 seconds) "And in that MOMENT — everyone in that whole house was FILLED with the Holy Spirit!"
PHYSICAL MOMENT #3 — FILLING: "Put your hands on your heart. FEEL that? That's the Holy Spirit entering. THAT'S POWER!"
Pause for 3-5 seconds while kids are still standing, hands on hearts. "EVERYTHING CHANGED. The scared disciples... were about to become the BOLDEST people in the city.""
PART 3: The Transformation (From Hidden to BOLD)
Leader (sitting back down, voice strong): "Now here's what's WILD. Peter — one of the main disciples — had been SO SCARED. But when the Holy Spirit FILLED him... watch what happened next. Peter walked RIGHT OUT of that house. He stood in front of THOUSANDS of people and SHOUTED: 'You killed Jesus — but God raised Him from the dead. And HE is your Savior!'"
Say this with POWER and CONVICTION. "The same Peter who was hiding? Now he's BOLD. The same disciples who locked the doors? Now they're SPEAKING to crowds.
Why? Because the HOLY SPIRIT was INSIDE them. Not giving them muscles. Not giving them a microphone. But giving them COURAGE."
Ask Kids: "Can you imagine being SO scared... and then SO BRAVE in seconds? That's the Holy Spirit's POWER."
PART 4: The Power Released & The Promise for YOU
Leader (with wonder): "And here's what happened BECAUSE they were filled: Peter preached ONE SERMON. And do you know how many people believed in Jesus that day? THREE THOUSAND PEOPLE! 3,000!
Not because Peter was the best speaker. Not because he was the smartest. But because he was FILLED with the Holy Spirit's POWER!"
Call & Response: Leader: "When the Holy Spirit fills you, what happens?" Kids: "COURAGE! BOLDNESS! POWER!" Leader: "And that power... it SPREADS. It GROWS. One room filled... then the whole city knew about Jesus. Then the whole WORLD."
[Pause — let that sink in] Leader (bringing it HOME — direct and personal): "But here's the MOST IMPORTANT PART.
This story isn't just about 2,000 years ago. This is about YOU. RIGHT NOW. Jesus made a promise. He said: 'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. And you will be MY WITNESSES.'
That's not just for the disciples. THAT'S FOR YOU. Do you ever feel scared to tell someone about Jesus? Do you ever want to be brave but don't know how? Do you ever feel small or weak?
The Holy Spirit gives you REAL POWER. Not like a superhero — but the power to be WHO GOD MADE YOU TO BE.
The same Holy Spirit that was in that room? The one that moved wind and fire and turned scared people into bold witnesses?
HE WANTS TO FILL YOU. Not someday. Not when you're older. TODAY. The disciples didn't have to wait anymore. And you don't either. The Holy Spirit is HERE. He's ALIVE. And He's asking: Will you say YES?
[Pause for 5 seconds] That's what we're about to do."
INTERACTIVE REFLECTION
Ask kids these questions and allow real answers:
1. "What surprised you most about the story of Pentecost?"
2. "Why do you think the disciples needed the Holy Spirit before they could be bold witnesses?"
3. "What's something you wish you felt brave enough to do — tell someone about Jesus, stand up to a friend, make a different choice?"
4. "How could the Holy Spirit's power help you with that?"
5. "When have you felt God's presence or power in your life? What was that like?"
6. "If you could ask the Holy Spirit for one thing right now, what would it be?"
5) MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY: “Power to witness”
Verse: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." — Acts 1:8 (NIV)
Teaching Method: ACTION-BASED MEMORIZATION
Step 1: Read the verse together as a group, slowly.
Step 2: Assign ACTIONS to key words:
"Power" = make a fist and raise arm (strong muscle)
"Holy Spirit" = hands up to sky (receiving from above)
"Witnesses" = point outward to others (telling the story)
Step 3: Say the verse WITH the actions, slowly at first. Step 4: Remove one word and replace it with the action. Repeat. Step 5: Remove more words, ADD MORE ENERGY. Step 6: By the end, kids are doing a full ACTION SEQUENCE while saying the verse from memory!
Bonus Activity: Give each child a small card with the verse written out. Have them decorate it with:
Flames (for the Holy Spirit's fire)
Wind marks (for the rushing wind)
A heart (for receiving it in their hearts)
They take this home as their daily reminder: "I have the Holy Spirit's POWER inside me!"
6) HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATION: “FILLED WITH LOVE”
Introduction: "The disciples FELT the Holy Spirit come. It wasn't just a story they heard — it was REAL. They felt wind. They saw fire. They were FILLED with power and joy and boldness. Today, we're going to practice INVITING the Holy Spirit to fill us. We're not going to ask for a feeling — we're going to ask for His PRESENCE. His POWER. His courage inside us."
Setup: Dim the lights a bit (but keep it safe). Have soft worship music playing in the background. Arrange kids in a circle or small groups.
Instructions:
1. Have kids sit or stand comfortably.
2. Say: "I'm going to lead us in a prayer. As we pray, I want you to be very honest with God. Tell Him what you need His power FOR. What do you need to be brave about? What do you need His help with?"
3. Lead the prayer (say line by line, have kids repeat):
"Holy Spirit, come. Fill me with your presence. I'm not brave enough on my own. I need your courage. I need your power. I want to follow Jesus with my whole heart. I want to be bold. I want to be brave. Fill me, Holy Spirit. I say YES to you. Come and live in me. Amen."
4. Pause for 20-30 seconds of SILENCE. Let kids just sit with God.
5. Invite kids to share quietly: "Did anyone feel something? Did anyone sense God's presence? Maybe it was peace. Maybe it was joy. Maybe it was courage. Whatever you felt, that's the Holy Spirit WORKING in you."
6. Let a few kids share (don't pressure anyone).
7. Close with: "The Holy Spirit is not just in this moment. He lives in you NOW. Every time you need courage, every time you need power, He's THERE. He's INSIDE you. You can talk to Him anytime. You are NEVER alone."
7) CRAFTS
Craft 1: "FIRE & WIND WIND CHIME" Introduction:
Just as Adam and Eve were surrounded by beauty in God's garden, we can carry a reminder of God's perfect design for us everywhere we go — even in our books!
Introduction: "At Pentecost, there was wind AND fire. We're going to make a wind chime that celebrates BOTH — so every time the wind blows, you remember: the Holy Spirit's power is real and alive!"
Materials: • Wooden dowels or sticks (or straws) • String or yarn • Tissue paper (red, orange, yellow for flames) • White tissue paper (for wind/clouds) • Bells or beads (optional) • Markers • Tape or glue
Instructions:
1. Create flame shapes from colored tissue paper — red, orange, yellow flames.
2. Create wind/cloud shapes from white tissue paper.
3. Write on the flames: "Holy Spirit Power," "Courage," "Boldness," "Fire"
4. Write on the clouds: "Wind," "Presence," "Moving," "Alive"
5. Tie the flames and clouds to strings of different lengths.
6. Attach the strings to a wooden dowel or stick.
7. Add bells or beads to some strings so they make sound when the wind moves them.
8. Hang it where it will catch the breeze!
9. Every time it moves, kids remember: "The Holy Spirit is moving in my life!"
CRAFT 2: "POWER POTION BOTTLE" Introduction:
"The disciples didn't drink a potion to get the Holy Spirit's power — but we're going to make a visual reminder that the Holy Spirit's power is INSIDE us, and it's ALIVE and GROWING!"
Materials: • Clear plastic bottles (empty water bottles or small jars) • Glitter (gold, silver, or multicolor) • Oil or corn syrup • Food colouring (optional — red for fire, white for spirit) • Water • Beads or pom-poms • Tape or hot glue gun • Labels with the verse: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you" — Acts 1:8
Instructions:
1. Fill the bottle about halfway with oil or corn syrup.
2. Add food coloring (red or white or both) to make it visually interesting.
3. Fill the rest with water.
4. Add GLITTER — lots of it! This represents the Holy Spirit's presence and power.
5. Add beads or pom-poms for decoration.
6. Seal the top with tape or hot glue (so it doesn't spill).
7. Attach the verse label. 8. Shake it up!
Connection: "When you shake this, the glitter MOVES and SWIRLS and comes ALIVE. That's what the Holy Spirit does inside you. He's not dormant. He's ACTIVE. He's MOVING. When you need courage, shake this bottle and remember: I have the Holy Spirit's power inside me!"
8) SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Divide into age-appropriate groups. Assign a volunteer leader to each. Allow 15-20 minutes for discussion and prayer.
PRESCHOOL/EARLY ELEMENTARY GROUP:
1. "Can you tell the story of what happened at Pentecost in your own words?"
2. "How did the disciples feel BEFORE the Holy Spirit came? How did they feel AFTER?"
3. "The Holy Spirit made them BRAVE. What does the Holy Spirit help YOU be brave about?"
4. "If the Holy Spirit fills you with power, what could you do? (Tell people about Jesus? Be kind? Stand up for what's right?)"
5. Close with: "Let's ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with courage this week!"
ELEMENTARY GROUP:
1. "Why do you think Jesus told the disciples to WAIT for the Holy Spirit instead of just going out and preaching right away?"
2. "Peter went from being so scared he denied knowing Jesus to standing in front of thousands. What changed? How can that change happen in us?"
3. "The Bible says 3,000 people believed because of what happened. Why do you think the Holy Spirit's power was so OBVIOUS to people?"
4. "What's something you want to do FOR Jesus but feel like you need more courage for? How could the Holy Spirit help?"
5. "How is the Holy Spirit DIFFERENT from just trying really hard to be good on your own?"
6. Close with prayer: "Holy Spirit, give us the same boldness Peter had. Help us live with Your power today."
9) PRAYER
(Pray this together, line by line)
"Holy Spirit, we invite You here. We don't want to just hear about Your power — we want to FEEL it. We don't want to just know about You — we want to KNOW You. Fill us like You filled the disciples.
Give us courage. Give us boldness. Give us power to speak up, stand up, and live for Jesus. Help us remember: We are NEVER alone. You are with us. You are IN us. You give us everything we need. This week, help us LIVE like we believe it. Help us be brave. Help us be witnesses. Help us show people around us what the Holy Spirit can do. In Jesus' name, we say YES to Your Holy Spirit. Amen."
10) FINAL THOUGHT FOR PARENTS AND LEADER
The Power You Already Have This week, the most important message is simple but life-changing: The Holy Spirit isn't something you GET in the future when you're older or more mature. The Holy Spirit is available to YOU RIGHT NOW.
The disciples at Pentecost weren't super-spiritual people. They were scared, confused, and hiding. But when they were FILLED, everything changed. Courage replaced fear. Boldness replaced hiding. LIFE replaced death. That same dynamic is available to your kids — and to you.
CONVERSATIONS TO HAVE THIS WEEK: When they face fear: "Remember Pentecost? The disciples were terrified. But the Holy Spirit gave them courage. You can ask for that same courage right now." When they want to speak up but don't: "That feeling of being nervous to tell someone about Jesus? That's not weakness. That's the Holy Spirit inviting you to trust Him. Ask Him for boldness."
When they feel small or weak: "You're not supposed to do life in your own strength. The Holy Spirit's POWER lives inside you. Tap into it. It's already there."
11) Preschool (Ages 3–5)
Preschool (Ages 3-5) Story Focus: • Keep the story SHORT and VISUAL. • Use a felt board or picture cards to show: disciples hiding → wind comes → fire appears → disciples dancing and celebrating. • Focus on: "God's Holy Spirit makes us happy and brave!"
Games: • Instead of complex games, do simple movement: "When I clap, you RUN like the wind!" or "Wave your scarves like the Holy Spirit is moving you!" • "Fear to Fire" simplified: kids sit (scared) then stand and JUMP (happy!) when they hear a bell.
Craft: • Hand-print "Flames of Pentecost" — press hands in red/orange paint and display as flames. • Simple tissue paper collage of wind and fire. Memory Verse: • Simplify to: "The Holy Spirit gives me power!" • Teach with just the motions and one line repeated.
