PENTECOST Bible Lesson Overview
Theme: Forgiveness breaks chains—in others AND in us
Big Truth: When Jesus forgives us, He doesn't keep score. He throws our sins into the deepest ocean and remembers them no more. We're called to forgive the same way.
Key Scripture: Matthew 18:21–35 (The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant)
Memory Verse: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20:23a)
Pillar Focus: PRESENCE — knowing we're loved and forgiven, and extending that grace toothers
Age Range: 4–13 (adaptations provided)
1) INTRODUCTION
"Has anyone here ever felt like they had a HUGE weight on their shoulders? Like someone hurt you, and even though they apologised, you couldn't stop feeling mad? Turn to someone next to you and whisper: What does unforgiveness feel like in your body?"
Listen for 30 seconds.
"Well, today we're learning about a kind of freedom most people don't know about. It's the freedom that comes when you let go of anger. And it's WAY more powerful than holding onto it. Jesus told a story about a king who did something WILD. Let's find out what happens..."
2) GAME: "THE WEIGHT OF UNFORGIVENESS"
Materials: Backpacks, books, or weighted bags; open floor space
Instructions:
1.Divide kids into pairs.
2.One child wears a heavy backpack. The other walks beside them.
3.Have them walk across the room, then back.
4.Ask the weighted child: "How does your body feel? Is it hard to move? Tired?"
5.Then have the other child put on the backpack and repeat..
Connection Moment: "That weight you felt? That's what happens when we hold onto anger and refuse to forgive. It's HEAVY. When we forgive someone—even when it's hard—we get to take that backpack OFF. That's what Jesus is talking about today."
3) PRAISE & WORSHIP
Introduction: Before we dive into the story, let's prepare our hearts. Forgiveness isn't always easy. Sometimes we want to stay mad. But God's love is stronger than our anger. Let's sing about that
Song 1: "Jesus Loves Me" (or "Jesus Loves Me This I Know") Have kids do hand motions: hug themselves on "Jesus loves me," point to others on "little ones to Him belong"
Song 2: "Oh, How He Loves Us" Have kids sway gently, eyes closed if comfortable
Song 3: "Grace Greater Than All Our Sin" Emphasize the chorus; invite kids to sing the "grace" parts loudly
How to Make Worship Fun:
"When I say 'FORGIVEN,' you jump and throw your hands in the air! Ready? FORGIVEN!" (Practice 2-3 times)
4) BIBLE STORY SERMON: FORGIVENESS SETS US FREE
Teaching Styles Used: Interactive Storytelling, Character Immersion, Call & Response, ObjectLesson
STORY BREAKDOWN
PART 1: THE SERVANT'S DEBT
Read/Tell:
"There was a king—a RICH king. One day, he decided to count all his money and see who owed him what. He discovered something shocking: One of his servants owed him 10,000 talents of silver. To understand how CRAZY this number is: A talent is like 15 years of a worker's salary. So 10,000 talents? That's like owing 150,000 YEARS of pay checks! This servant would NEVER be able to pay it back.
The king was furious. He ordered the servant—along with his wife, kids, and everything heowned— to be sold as slaves to pay offthe debt."
Interactive Prompt: "Pause. Put yourself in this servant's shoes. He's terrified. His family is about to be taken away. What do you think he's feeling right now? Turn to your neighbor and describe it in ONE word."
Listen for 20 seconds.
"The servant fell to his knees and begged the king: 'Please, give me time! I promise I'll pay you back every penny!'"
Call & Response: "Kids, here's something we need to say together. When the servant asked for mercy, the king had to make a choice. Do you think the king:
A) Threw him in jail? B) Made him work forever? C) Did something NO ONE expected?"
Wait for responses.
"The king did something NO ONE expected..."
PART 2: FORGIVENESS
Read/Tell:
"The king STOPPED. He looked at this broken servant. And something shifted in his heart. The king felt COMPASSION—deep, gut-level pity. And he made a decision that changed everything: He FORGAVE the entire debt. All 150,000 years of payments. GONE. The king said, 'You're free. Go. I forgive you. Your debt is canceled.'" Character Immersion: "Imagine you ARE that servant. You're on your knees, expecting the worst.
The king could destroy your life. But instead... he FREES you. Your family is safe. Your debt is GONE. How does your body feel right now? Do you feel light? Heavy? Happy?Confused?"
Pause for reflection.
"That's the feeling of being FORGIVEN. Jesus wants us to know: That's how God treats US. Our debt—all the stuff we've done wrong—is FORGIVEN. We're free."
Object Lesson: "The Erased Debt"
Show a whiteboard or large paper with "10,000 talents" written on it.
"This is the servant's debt. It's HUGE. It's impossible. But watch what the king does..."
Erase it completely.
"GONE. Completely erased. That's what forgiveness looks like. God looks at our sins, and instead of holding them over our heads, He erases them completely. And He wants us to do the same thing for others."
PART 3: THE UNFORGIVING SERVANT
Read/Tell:
"But here's where the story gets DARK. The servant walks out of the king's presence, totally FREE. His debt? Gone. His family? Safe. His life? Restored. But then he sees someone else, a fellow servant who OWES HIM money. Not 150,000 years worth. Just... a little bit. Like a few months' worth of wages. And this servant—the one who just had his MASSIVE debt forgiven, he GRABS his fellow servant by the throat and screams, 'PAY ME BACK NOW!'"
Interactive Prompt: "Stop. Does anyone see the problem here? Raise your hand if this servant is being... not cool."
Let kids respond.
"The other servant falls to his knees—just like the first servant did with the king—and begs,'Please, give me time! I'll pay you back!' But the first servant? He doesn't listen. He has him ARRESTED. He's put in JAIL until he pays back what he owes."
Call & Response: "Here's the wild part. The forgiven servant just received forgiveness. He knows how GOOD it feels to have your debt erased. And now he's doing the OPPOSITE to someone else.Kids, that's called HYPOCRISY. Can you say that word? HYPOCRISY."
Have kids repeat: "HYPOCRISY!"
"It means saying one thing and doing another. It means accepting forgiveness and then refusing to give it. Jesus is saying: That's NOT okay."
PART 4: REDEMPTION & THE CONSEQUENCE
Read/Tell:
"The other servants see what happened. They're SHOCKED. They go back to the king and tell him EVERYTHING. And the king calls the first servant back. The king's face is no longer kind. He's angry. He says: 'I forgave you your ENTIRE debt because you asked me to. Don't you think you should have shown that same mercy to your fellow servant?' And then the king does something serious. He hands the servant over to be tortured until he pays back every penny of the debt he was forgiven for."
Emotional Engagement: "Listen to what Jesus is saying here. It's not that forgiveness is
OPTIONAL. It's not that we forgive ONLY if we feel like it. We forgive because we've beenforgiven.
And if we refuse to forgive, we're rejecting the very mercy that set us free."
The Truth: "When we don't forgive, it's like we're telling God, 'The forgiveness You gave me doesn't matter. I'm going to hold onto my anger anyway.' And that separates us from God's love.It puts us back in prison—the prison of unforgiveness."
Connection to Jesus: "Jesus is the KING in this story. He forgave us something we could
NEVER pay back—our sins. He paid the price on the cross so we could be free. And now He's asking us: Will you forgive others the way I forgave you?"
Pause. "Forgiveness isn't about the other person. It's about US being free."
INTERACTIVE REFLECTION
Ask kids these questions and allow real answers:
1."The servant received HUGE forgiveness and then refused to give a little forgiveness. Why do you think he did that? Has that ever been you?"
2."When you hold onto anger at someone, what does it feel like in your heart? Does it actually hurt them, or does it hurt YOU?"
3."If the forgiven servant had forgiven the other servant, how would the story have ended differently?"
4."Is there someone in your life right now who hurt you, and you've been holding onto anger? You don't have to name them, but think about it."
5."What's ONE thing that makes forgiveness hard? Is it pride? Fear? Thinking they don't deserve it?"
6."Jesus says, 'I forgive you SO much that I'm asking you to forgive others.' What would change in your life if you actually did that this week?""
5) MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY: “Power to witness”
Verse: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20:23a)
Teaching Method: FORGIVENESS ECHO CHAIN
Have kids stand in a circle.
Leader says the verse once, full.
Kids repeat it together.
Leader says first phrase: "If you forgive..."
Kids echo: "If you forgive..."
Continue through each phrase.
After kids know it, have them say it while doing an action: clap, jump, spin, etc.
Variations: Say the verse in a whisper (symbolizing the quiet power of forgiveness) Say it while making a throwing-away motion (symbolizing releasing anger) Say it while giving someone a pretend hug (symbolizing restoration)
6) HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATION: “THE FORGIVENESS RELEASE”
Setup: Have kids sit in a comfortable spot. Dim lights if possible. Play soft instrumental music.
Say This:
"Close your eyes. I want you to think about someone who hurt you. Maybe they said something mean. Maybe they left you out. Maybe they broke a promise. Don't say the name out loud. Just think about it.
Now, I want you to feel something: How does holding onto that anger feel in your heart? Is it heavy? Does it feel like a wall between you and them? Does it feel like a chain? Jesus is here right now. And He's saying to you: 'I forgive you SO much. And because I've forgiven you, I'm asking you to let go too. Not for THEM. For YOU. So you can be free.'
Here's what I want you to do. You're going to imagine opening your hand—your invisible hand—and you're going to release that anger. Just... let it go. You don't have to forgive them tomorrow. You don't have to pretend it didn't hurt. But right now, in this moment, you're going to choose to release the grip of anger."
Pause for 30 seconds of silence.
"If you want to, you can whisper to Jesus: 'I'm letting go. Help me forgive.'"
Pause for 30 more seconds.
"Now, I want you to imagine Jesus coming close to you and saying: 'I'm so proud of you. You'refree now. That was brave.'"
Pause.
PRAYER:
"Dear Jesus, Thank You for forgiving us. Thank You for erasing our debt and setting us free. Some of us in this room are carrying anger right now. We're holding onto hurt. But we want to belike the WISE servant—the one who received forgiveness and GAVE forgiveness. Help us let go.Help us forgive the way You forgive us. Not because it's easy. But because we love You. And we want to be free. In Your name, Amen."
7) CRAFTS
Craft 1: "DEBT ERASER CARD"
Materials:
Card stock or folded paper
Markers
White gel pens
Eraser (pencil or whiteboard)
Optional: glitter, stickers
Instructions:
Fold the card in half
On the front, write: "YOUR DEBT IS ERASED" in big letters
On the inside, have kids write something they struggle to forgive themselves for (or let them draw it)
Write the memory verse: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20:23)
Decorate with markers and stickers
When they're done, have them use an eraser to partially erase the "debt" they wrote, symbolizing Jesus erasing it
Connection: "This card reminds you: Your mistakes don't define you. God doesn't keep score. Neither should you."
CRAFT 2: "FREEDOM CHAIN”:
Materials:
Colored paper strips (cut into thin rectangles, about 1" x 5")
Tape or glue stick
Markers
One "broken" chain link (draw a chain link that's open)
Instructions:
Each child writes one thing they're RELEASING on a paper strip (anger at a friend, grudge, hurt feeling, etc.)
They roll the strip into a ring and tape it closed
As they add each ring, they link it to the previous one—making a chain
The last ring is the "broken" one—symbolizing freedom from the chain of unforgiveness
Kids can take their chains home or display them in the room
Connection: "Unforgiveness is a chain that keeps us trapped. But when we forgive, that chain BREAKS. We're free."
8) SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Divide into age-appropriate groups. Assign a volunteer leader to each. Allow 15-20 minutes for discussion and prayer.
ELEMENTARY GROUP:
"Tell about a time someone forgave you when you didn't deserve it. How did that make you feel?"
"Why do you think the first servant refused to forgive the other servant, even though the king forgave him so much?"
"What's harder: asking for forgiveness or GIVING forgiveness? Why?"
"The servant ended up back in prison because he refused to forgive. Have you ever felt 'trapped' by holding onto anger? What happened?"
"If you could forgive ONE person this week, who would it be? What would you want to say to them?"
"How does knowing that Jesus forgave you change how you think about forgiving others?"
9) PRAYER
"Dear Jesus, Thank You for this story. Thank You for showing us that forgiveness isn't weakness, it's STRENGTH. Thank You for forgiving us when we don't deserve it. Today, we want to choose to let go. We want to forgive like You forgive us. We don't want to be trapped by anger anymore. Some of us are forgiving someone specific this week. Some of us are learning to forgive OURSELVES. Help us remember: Forgiveness is freedom. And You've already given us that freedom. We love You. In Jesus' name, Amen."
10) FINAL THOUGHT FOR PARENTS AND LEADER
THIS WEEK'S TRUTH God forgives us completely. He calls us to do the same for others—not because they deserve it, but because we deserve freedom.
MEMORY VERSE "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20:23a)
THREE WAYS TO REINFORCE THIS WEEK
THE MIRROR MOMENT: When your child looks in the mirror this week, remind them: "You are forgiven. God doesn't keep score. Neither do you.”
THE HARD CONVERSATION: If your child has hurt someone, don't just say "Say sorry." Go deeper: "Do you understand how they felt when you did that?" "Jesus forgave us something we could never pay back. Can you forgive [person] for [thing]?" "Forgiveness might take time. That's okay. But today, will you START letting go?"
THE LIVED EXAMPLE: Kids learn forgiveness by SEEING it.
This week:
Forgive someone in front of your kids (a family member, friend, yourself) Say out loud: "I'm choosing to let go. I'm choosing freedom."
FAMILY ACTIVATION
"The Forgiveness Conversation" (10 minutes, dinnertime)
Sit down and ask your family:
1."Who in our family do you think needs forgiveness from someone?" (Don't answer. Just listen.)
2."What would change in our family if we were QUICK to forgive and SLOW to stay mad?"
3."Jesus forgives us completely. Should we do that for each other?"
Then—and this is important—lead by example:
If you've been holding a grudge against your spouse, sibling, or child, forgive them OUT LOUD.
Say: "I've been holding onto anger at [person] for [thing]. I'm letting it go. I forgive them. I choose freedom."
Your kids will NEVER forget that moment.
BLESSING CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK
"Forgive Before Friday"
Pick ONE person you're mad at. Before Friday:
1.Forgive them (internally—you don't have to tell them if it's not safe)
2.If it's safe, tell them or show them forgiveness through your actions
3.Notice how you FEEL different—lighter, freer, more at peace
This isn't about them. It's about YOU being free.
11) Preschool (Ages 3–5)
Story Focus: Simplify to: "A king forgave someone a big debt. The person was happy. But then he wouldn't forgive his friend. The king was sad. Jesus wants us to forgive like the king."
Skip: Debt Tag game, detailed explanation of "talents"
Focus On: Simple storytelling with puppets or felt board. The feeling of forgiveness (lightness, happiness)
"Jesus forgives you. Will you forgive your friends?"
Games: The Weight of Unforgiveness (simplified version—they just carry a toy for 10 seconds)
Memory Verse: Simplify to: "Jesus forgives us. We forgive others."
Crafts: Focus on Debt Eraser Card (simple version—just draw what they're forgiving)
